The Vitalograph AIM™ (Aerosol Inhalation Monitor) is shown up close for better observation of feedback lights. The device is showing a good result.

If red dots light up the upper trachea area, the DPI results are a failure. Inspiratory flow rate was either too low or too slow. If orange dots show up in the upper portion of the lung illustration, the results are sub-optimal. The breath was held for too short a time or the inspiratory flow was not forceful enough. If green dots light up the lowest portion of the lung illustration, the DPI results are good. A forceful inhalation with adequate inspired volume and breath hold time was achieved.

Red Dots outside the lung illustration (fail): Canister fired too early or not at all. Red dots inside the upper trachea illustration (fail): Inspiratory flow rate was too fast. Orange dots in upper lung illustration (Sub-optimal): Inhalation time and/or breath hold too short. Green dots in lower lung illustration (good): Correct canister activation, with adequate flow rate, inhale and breath hold time.

The Vitalograph AIM™ (Aerosol Inhalation Monitor) is designed to assist medical practitioners in training subjects to use their inhaler correctly. Teaching patients correct techniques will result in more accurate drug delivery and ultimately better disease management. The AIM uses a single-use disposable inhaler to provide its feedback on the correct technique including Inspiratory acceleration at the start of inspiration, the timing of the firing of MDI/ Activation of DPI, inspiratory flow rate throughout inspiration, and breath-hold time at the end of inhalation. This is an excellent device to monitor technique over time using a "teach back" method. Reimbursement for CPT code 94664 is between $15-18 so the device pays for itself quickly and ads value to your practice.
